When former professional basketball player Denburk Reid founded the Montreal Community Cares Foundation in 2012, his goal was to use sports and human rights to teach youth about community engagement and leadership. However, he realized that many of the programs, such as the Red Rush Basketball Leadership Program, seemed to appeal more to boys.
